Frequently Asked Questions

BACKPACK DIMENSIONS

Will this backpack, when deployed, fit a big person?

Please be informed that for both the TACTICAL ONE and the CIVILIAN ONE backpack styles (1) the internal shoulder straps are velcro adjustable to accommodate different body sizes and (2) additional internal side cinch straps can be ordered (by special request) that will extend the lengths of the internal side cinch straps to accommodate different body sizes as well.

CONCEALED CARRY

Are there any problems with concealed carry while using one of your backpacks?

Although our backpacks were not designed specifically for concealed carry, our backpacks have compartments that are suitable for concealed carry; to include hidden pockets that are readily accessible once the backpacks are deployed into a protective vest. You can legally carry your Leatherback Gear Bulletproof backpack along with your concealed weapon so long as you adhere to the rules of conceal carry in your state. Keep in mind however, that we did not design our backpacks for the purpose of carrying guns...but rather for the quick deployment of the hidden armor into front & back protection.

NEW PRODUCTS

Do you have a backpack for children?

We are in the final stage of development for our COVER ONE backpack. The COVER ONE backpack is designed to hold two 9" x 12" ballistic armor panels. It will offer the same front and back level IIIA protection, and is designed specifically for pre-teenage and younger body. The release of the new COVER ONE backpack, in both the "Black" and "Heather Gray" colors, is scheduled for July-August 2019. Please provide your full name, email address and phone number if you would like to be notified of new product releases.

Do you have any new backpack styles?

Yes, we will be launching 2 new bulletproof backpack styles; the COVER ONE (high school, college, adult size) designed to hold two 11" x 14" ballistic armor panels, and the COVER ONE (pre-teenage and younger) being designed to hold two 9" x 12" ballistic armor panels. Both new bulletproof backpack styles, in both the "Black" and "Heather Gray" colors, will offer the same front and back level IIIA protection, and should be available in spring-summer 2019. Please provide your full name, email address and phone number if you would like to be notified of new product releases.

ORDERING & PAYMENT PLANS

Do you have payment plans for the bag?

Yes we do offer a payment plan! Choose the style and color of the backpack you'd like, then go through the shopping cart checkout process and enter your shipping info. When you get to the payment section, select the option for "Sezzle" which gives you a 0% interest installment payment plan.

STYLES & COLORS

Do these backpacks come in different colors?

Yes. The TACTICAL ONE comes in Black, Wolf Gray and Coyote Tan colors. The CIVILIAN ONE comes in Black and Wolf Gray colors. Black is the most popular color in both styles. Of the two new style backpacks being designed, both the SPORT ONE and COVER ONE backpacks will be offered in both Black and "Heather Gray".

RIFLE ROUNDS

Will it stop a rifle bullet?

While we do not state that our backpacks will stop rifle rounds due to the NIJ Level 111A standards and certification, keep in mind that when it comes to stopping any bullet, things like time and distance become very important at any level. Tactical Rifleman, the social media consumer advocacy group for testing all things tactical, recently completed an independent, third party evaluation on Leatherback Gear Backpacks which is live on YouTube (https://youtu.be/g-m8tMqmDCg) - our backpacks stopped 9mm, .45, 5.56 and 7.62 rifle rounds! A video worth watching! Also, if you carry a laptop, a textbook or textbooks, etc. in your backpack you are in effect customizing the stopping power to assist the armor panels we include to be more effective...how much more is unknown to us because everyone carries different items in their backpacks. We also do not know where you will carry different items that could end up on your chest or your back and help supplement the armor we've included in your specific order.

Will these stop low end rifle fire projectiles ie 556 7.62x39 and 556 62 grain steel penatrators?

Great question! When it comes to rifle rounds; you can remove our NIJ Level IIIA soft armor panels and insert rifle panels(internal velcro-sealed armor pockets specifically designed to hold our Level IIIA soft amor panels with the following dimensions 11"W x 14"L x 1/4"Thickness). Conversely you could insert 2 of our soft armor panels inside each hidden armor pocket. "Tactical Rifleman” recently completed an independent, third party evaluation on Leatherback Gear Backpacks which is live on their YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/g-m8tMqmDCg) - our backpacks stopped 9mm, .45, 5.56 and 7.62 rifle rounds!

While we do not state that our backpacks will stop rifle rounds due to the NIJ standards and certification, keep in mind that when it comes to stopping any bullet, things like time and distance become very important at any level. Whether that is a 100yards, 25yards or even 2 inches. The next part of stopping something is the impact and then material through which a bullet or round will have to travel over time and distance.

We have designed our backpacks to be as light as possible and be able to be carried everywhere. Additionally, please note that ANY additional items carried in the backpack (such as laptop computers, books, etc.) will allow the wearer to essentially add or "customize" potential stopping power. You can also purchase and insert additional soft armor panels for additional stopping power.

PRODUCT AND MANUFACTURING

Is Leatherback Gear™ made in the USA?

All Leatherback Gear™ is designed and engineered within the United States of America and always will be! Our armor is manufactured in Southern California while our backpacks are manufactured by one of our select supply partners around the world. However, they are fully assembled here in Southern California to meet our rigorous standards for quality and performance.

Why not produce a backpack inside the U.S.A.?

Leatherback Gear will only utilize a bag production supply partner who meets or exceeds our standards for manufacturing. We have chosen to utilize supply partners outside of the U.S.A. solely for the backpacks and bags to be produced due to the extreme costs associated with producing to our standards here within the U.S.A. We are, however, constantly looking for a supply partner locally in the U.S.A. who could meet our needs and not have to pass those higher costs on to you as our customer. All armor however is made here in the U.S.A. and our complete personal protection system is assembled here in the U.S.A..

How does Leatherback Gear™ ensure that each product meets its high standard of quality?

When selecting a manufacturing location, we ensure the facility meets all of Leatherback Gear's™ rigorous and uncompromising standards that allow us to achieve the highest possible level of quality. We consistently monitor production and regularly test components to ensure products made in the facility continue to earn the right to bear the Leatherback Gear icon. If it’s not good enough for our standards…we won’t risk your safety with it. That goes for each and every product we make, no matter where we make it.

BULLETPROOF (OR SOFT BODY) ARMOR

Where is the body armor manufactured?

All soft body armor is manufactured in the U.S.A.

Is it legal to own body armor?

Body armor is legal in all 50 states for law-abiding citizens.

As a US citizen or resident of the US you have the right to protect yourself. You have the right to own a bulletproof vest. However, that right to own a bulletproof vest is automatically taken away if you commit a violent crime. The James Guelff and Chris McCurley Body Armor Act of 2002 stipulate that no person previously convicted of a violent crime may purchase, own or possess body armor. If you have been convicted of a violent felony, you cannot own a bulletproof vest of any kind.

There is no background check, waiting period, or federal registration required to buy body armor. No permits or paperwork required to legally purchase it and/or own as a civilian. You can order a bulletproof backpack-to-vest on LeatherbackGear.com, and have it delivered to your home or office without asking permission or reporting to anyone. You do not need to register it with authorities.

Possession of body armor is legal in all 50 states with ONLY the following restrictions:

  1. Body armor possession is illegal if you have been convicted of a violent felony. Also, wearing body armor while committing a crime will increase penalties greatly. Body armor was not designed for nor intended for criminals!
  2. You can purchase your bulletproof backpack-to-vest online and take delivery in 49 of the 50 states. Body armor may not be shipped to a civilian in Connecticut. Body armor purchases in Connecticut are not allowed by Connecticut state regulations to occur over the internet; they MUST be made only through an in-person store purchase. You can still own a bulletproof vest if you live in Connecticut, we just cannot ship vests to Connecticut.
Can I travel with my backpack with body armor on a plane?

Yes! Our customers have traveled with our backpack with soft body armor through various major domestic and international airport TSA security screening stations without incidence.

Is my backpack with body armor TSA approved?

Yes! Body armor is approved by TSA for both carry-on bags or checked bags (https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/body-armor).

What does the “NIJ Level IIIA Rating” of body armor mean?

The soft body armor panels in your Leatherback Gear™ bulletproof backpack are made of Polyethylene and are NIJ (National Institute of Justice) rated for a Level IIIA threat. This Level IIIA rating is the ballistic standard of resistance used in the United States and most of the world. Body armor becomes NIJ rated when it passes a strict set of guidelines at a NIJ certified 3rd party ballistic laboratory. To be rated level IIIA, armor must protect the wearer from handgun rounds up to a .44 magnum (bullet with a mass of 240 grains and a velocity of 1340 ft./s), including 9mm submachine gun rounds, and even 12 gauge shotgun slugs. Please note that we private label our armor panels so our name “Leatherback Gear™” is not listed through NIJ website as the certificates belong to our manufacturer.

What is the warranty and lifespan of Body Armor Panels?

All body armor has a limited lifespan due to the natural degradation of ballistic materials over time. Leatherback Gear™ body armor panels have a 5-year lifespan with a full manufacturer warranty, guaranteeing the body armor panels from a defect during the entire lifespan of every vest produced. It is advisable to replace your soft body armor panel within the 5-year period from the date of manufacture that can be found on the label of every soft body armor panel. Soft body armor panels should always be replaced in the event that the soft armor panel has been compromised in any way including having been subject to and having stopped any caliber of bullet that may have been fired at the soft body armor panel.

Can I use bulletproof panel (soft armor) made by another company with my backpack?

Great question! Please be informed that all Leatherback Gear backpacks are specifically created for and primarily designed for Civilian use. The internal carrier compartments, that hold the level IIIA protection soft armor panels firmly in place, are specifically designed to accommodate the 11" x 14" x 1/4" soft armor panels sold by Leatherback Gear. When it comes to rifle rounds, you may, at your discretion, substitute a non-Leatherback Gear soft or hard ballistic panel into the carrier compartments, although please be advised that if you do: (1) we have not tested for and, therefore cannot guarantee the structural integrity of the compartments for properly accommodating non-Leatherback Gear ballistic panels, and therefore, (2) the 1-year Warranty against manufacturer defect of the backpacks becomes null and void. Having provided the above disclaimer, we are aware that customers have purchased an extra set of the IIIA soft armor panels from Leatherback Gear to provide extra protection. Tactical Rifleman, the social media consumer advocacy group for testing all things tactical, recently completed an independent, third party evaluation on Leatherback Gear Backpacks which is live on YouTube https://youtu.be/g-m8tMqmDCg. During their testing our backpacks stopped 9mm & .45 with the backpack in deployed mode (1 panel thickness); and 5.56 & 7.62 rifle rounds with the backpack in backpack mode (meaning 2 panel thickness with the two level IIIA soft armor panels back-to-back)! A video worth watching! Also, if you carry a laptop, a textbook or textbooks, etc. in your backpack you are in effect customizing the stopping power to assist the armor panels we include to be more effective...how much more is unknown to us because everyone carries different items in their backpacks.
